The Best Shows on Netflix to binge-watch in your free time

Updated: Mar 2, 2021

So, you have been binge-watching the entire lockdown period and now you have no clue what series to watch next. Well, do not fear here a few ideas of what I watched on Netflix to escape the pandemic. After being home for a year I ran out of shows to watch and in desperation I went searching for some new material and I discovered some gems on Netflix. Here are the best shows to watch on Netflix right now. I promise you, there is something for everyone on this list. 📺

Sweet Magnolia

Lifelong friends Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue lift each other up as they juggle relationships, family and careers in the small, Southern town of Serenity.

Queen of the South

A woman escapes from a Mexican cartel and rises to become a drug "queenpin" in America.

Grace and Frankie

Two nemeses become bonded jilted wives after their husbands reveal they have been having an affair with each other since the 1990s and now plan to get married.

Dead to Me

Jen (Christina Applegate) is a sardonic widow determined to solve her husband's recent hit-and-run murder. Judy (Linda Cardellini) is an optimistic free spirit who's recently suffered her own tragic loss. When the two women meet at a support group, they become unlikely friends despite their polar-opposite personalities. But as they bond over bottles of wine, Entenmann's cookies and a shared affinity for The Facts of Life, Judy desperately tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it.

New Girl

If you've marathoned Friends, Brooklyn Nine Nine and The Big Bang Theory, New Girl is worth adding to your watch list. With a surprisingly prolific 145 episodes, New Girl (at first) is about Jess, who moves in with three unusual housemates after her boyfriend cheats on her. Those housemates are Nick, Schmidt and Winston.

New Girl can get a little repetitive, especially with that many episodes under its belt. Wait it out for later seasons which are mixed up with the return of pilot episode star Coach and the addition of Megan Fox to the cast - while Deschanel takes maternity leave. This is one of the best Netflix shows to binge, if you want something light and fun to enjoy.

Schitt's Creek

When the super-wealthy Rose family are defrauded by their business manager and lose all their money, they’re forced to move to Schitt’s Creek, a backwater town they once purchased as a joke and which is now their only remaining asset. They go from living in a mansion to sharing two rooms in a rundown motel – and the sitcom derives its charm from them slowly adjusting to their new surroundings over the course of the seasons (of which there are five on Netflix). There are some brilliant performances, particularly from creator Dan Levy and his on and off-screen father Eugene (who you’ll recognise as the dad from American Pie). It’s slow-paced and sweet, much like life in a small town.

Money Heist

When a team of nine criminals launch an audacious heist at Spain’s Royal Mint, they are convinced that their meticulous plan has every eventuality covered. But things start to unravel when the enigmatic mastermind behind the heist starts getting close to the police detective in charge of securing the safe release of the 67 hostages. Although the twisting plot stretches the limits of credulity at points, Money Heist is a deliciously frenetic and tension-filled series that makes surprisingly sympathetic figures out of its devilish main characters.

Designated Survivor

A lower level United States Cabinet member is suddenly appointed president after a catastrophic attack kills everyone above him in the line of succession.

YOU

A tech-savvy young man utilizes modern-day resources to lure a woman into falling in love with him.

Now, go Netflix and chill.

Firefly Lane

The greatest love story of all can be between friends. When unlikely duo Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) meet at age fourteen, they couldn't be more different. Tully is the brash and bold girl you can't ignore, while Kate is the mousy shy girl you never notice. But when a tragedy brings them together, they are bonded for life -- forever inseparable best friends. Together they experience thirty years of ups and downs -- triumphs and disappointments, heartbreak and joy, and a love triangle that strains their friendship. One goes on to fabulous wealth and fame, the other chooses marriage and motherhood -- but through the decades, their bond remains -- until it faces the ultimate test. (Keep the tissues close)

I am sure lockdown made us all Netflix or series junkies and even though lockdown has subsided you are still a junkie always looking out what to watch next. 2020 was not an easy year, but the escape of entertainment has certainly helped us in some way to get through it.
